The Bibliothèque Mazarine. The Bibliothèque Mazarine, which in 1945 was joined to the Institut de France, located since 1805 in the Collège des Quatre-Nations, is dependent on the French Ministry of Education. The Bibliothèque Mazarine’s reading room, restored between 1968 and 1974, recreates the surroundings of an important XVIIth century library and, over three hundred and fifty years after its foundation, remains an institution accessible to all, to the merely curious or the learned, nationals and foreigners. “Where [do I go from here]? I asked myself that question when I was twenty, again when I was thirty, again when I was forty, fifty … I could never answer it. Now I know something: I have to persist. That means live, write, and face, like everyone else, the other side of every life—the unknown.”
In honor of the centennial of the birth of Octavio Paz, read his 1991 Art of Poetry interview.

Casco Viejo, Panama
The artful weaving of a toquilla palm creates what’s known the world over as a lightweight summer classic – the Panama hat. But calling it an Ecuador hat is slightly more accurate since the hats were all originally woven in Ecuador. Like many other South American goods they shipped first to Panama and then all over the world.
